Blogger does it again. Completely out of order. Now this post doesn't even make sense if this chicken is the first thing you see. Oh, well. I had to post the first roast chicken I ever cooked. Call me spoiled or lazy or disinterested, but I'd never done it before, but now I'm on a pretty restrictive diet where I can't eat wheat, onions, garlic, and a holy host of other things and so I'm having to make a lot of things from scratch to ensure they don't have those ingredients. After we ate this chicken, I made chicken broth for the first time. 21 cups of it. Is anyone proud of me yet?
We just bought a pumpkin tonight. Jason is excited to carve it. Apparently Lily is, too. I'm not that excited to carve it. I think I don't like cleaning up messes.
Aha! Here is the looking good in red picture! She really does. I wish BYU's colors were red. Uncle Travis sent her this shirt when he graduated (Go Travis!) but I have a hard time putting it on her...I didn't think I was terribly against U of U but I guess I am. She's also sitting on a fire truck some friends from church let us borrow. They must have taken pity on her as most of her toys are things around our house ("Here, Lily, play with this spatula." or "Here Lily check out this old Nesquik bottle with a cookie cutter inside that makes noise, roll it around on the floor. Good job, Lily! See how fun that is!")

First of all, I've always been proud of you. Even before your 21 cups of chicken broth (though I will say, that IS impressive).
Second of all, I LIKE your creative "toys" (and by "like," I mean "love")- I mean, come on- how often do we buy the expensive toys only to find they have just as much fun, if not more, with a spatula? Besides, I feel it helps them expand their creativity. Despite what the toy companies want us to think, I'm still a little skeptical about how much imagination and creativity is really developed when the toys do everything for the kid- play music, make flashing lights, etc. I won't go so far as to say such toys are pointless, but I just have a hard time believing a kid who has the fancy toys will REALLY be more likely to succeed at M.I.T. than the kid who didn't have those toys...
So, I say, keep the spatulas coming for your darling little girl! :)
Owen has dozens of pseudo-toys (empty containers, empty paper towel rolls, sofa cushions, sticks, twigs, etc.); and I think he will turn out just fine. As a matter of fact, Owen is most stoked when he can play with various items of David's wardrobe such as belts, ties, and shoes. Maybe we can get our two creative kids together and see what house hold items they can convert into toys!
Regarding the roasted chicken, well done, Ashlee! That looked super yummy. You are, as usual, very impressive.
Ash, the chicken looks amazing. Great job. Next lets see the pickles.
